“Retro Maven” is a free standing sculpture created to play off its environment. Each Material choice creates a range of experience opportunities for viewers. Beginning with the hair: the Moire Effect is employed, which creates an optical illusion of movement while walking around the piece. The rectangle area that designates the eyes, or “viewfinder” is outfitted with a mirror that gives the piece. the. ability to reflect its surroundings., each moment creating a new view for the observer as well as the sculpture. The surface treatment utilizes the science of retro-reflection, commonly found in street signs. The goal of this piece is to inspire curiosity and to prompt people to take in their surroundings.

ABOUT THE PROCESS
The opportunity to create “Retro Maven” was won via a pitch night contest, where of all the artists that submitted to the open call, 5 artists were selected to the final round to present their artwork to a panel of judges. Each artist had 5 minutes to pitch, and at the end of all the presentations, the judges selected a winner.

"Retro Maven" was built from July - September of 2021 and driven cross country twice, once to display in Grand Rapids, MI at Artprize, and then on her return journey in Flagstaff, AZ as part of Creative Flagstaff First Friday Art walk.
